Alex Carpenter

UX & Interaction Designer · Writer · Developer

I'm a student at Champlain College majoring in User Experience and Interaction Design with minors in Computer Science and Writing. I'm passionate about design, UI/UX, art, and writing.

I grew up in Boston and started college as a Computer Science major at University of Vermont. Interested in design and art, I transferred to Champlain College to pursue a degree in UX and Interaction Design — a decision that has allowed me to explore my passions for design, art, and writing in a more focused way.

I'm pursuing a B.S. in UX and Interaction Design with minors in Computer Science and Writing — a combination that is helping me think visually and communicate ideas clearly. I'm always looking for opportunities to grow and apply my skills in design, art, UI/UX, and writing in meaningful ways.

I'm also an avid runner, hiker, and skier and have been a member of the Dance Team as well as Game Club at Champlain College.

Nomenclature and Structure of Letter Forms

I created a typographic exploration of letterforms combining illustrations created using Adobe Illustrator with layout using Adobe InDesign. I focused on making sure that the size of the body text and examples were scaled to fit the print. I wanted to make examples legible for me in Indesign, when I needed to scale them down and consider the actual print size. Using a lot of negative space to draw attention to the examples as well as keeping a consistent style (examples structured in a uniform way) was also important.

Typographic Radial System Poster Design

Given supplied text, designed a Radial System of typographic organization using Adobe Illustrator. Constraints were black-and-white and only lines for graphic elements. In the radial system all elements are organized to extend from a central point of focus. The compositions are dynamic, as the eye is drawn to the focal point of the radial composition. For this poster, given the list of compositions, I decided to rotate all of the compositions around the center with the performer's name in the center and along each spoke.

Coding Projects

I worked on two final projects, one was Yahtzee in Java and the other was Battleship in Python. Yahtzee made use of object-oriented concepts, polymorphism, and inheritance. Battleship focused on implementing game logic and user interaction in Python. You can download the projects on my Github page.
